Popis: There is an interesting correlation between the weight of the prostate gland and total body weight in the albino rat. Referring to Donaldson’s tables (1), one finds that the prostate gland, after maturity is reached, weighs approximately 1 mg. for each gram of total body weight until the animal reaches old age. For example, the average of 7 consecutive chronological figures in Donaldson’s tables between the time of maturity and old age gives an average body weight of 180.4 gm., while the average weight of the prostate gland during the same period is 180.5 mg. As old age occurs the relative weight of the prostate gland increases considerably. The figures following those referred to above, in chronological order, when averaged indicate an increase of 67 per cent over the relative weight of the prostate gland during middle-life. In attempting to account for the increase in the relative weight of the prostate in aging rats one might naturally consider the possible influence of decreasing function of the teste...
