Popis: The Wade equation can be used to account for the peak profiles that are obtained under linear and nonlinear (Langmuir) chromatographic conditions. This equation is derived from a kinetic model of chromatography in which axial dispersion is ignored and the adsorption and desorption of solute between mobile and stationary phase are accounted for by a second-order and a first-order rate equation respectively. In this work, we extend the Wade equation to the case where two second-order rate equations are used to account for the sorption kinetics. An approach for the simplification of the Wade equation for practical use is also proposed. We demonstrate that the Wade equation can be reduced to the Gaussian equation when the injection amount is small and the interaction between the solute and binding site on the adsorbent surface is not specific. This result is consistent with the solution derived from the linear driving force model in the scope of analytical chromatography.
