Genetic counseling is a process whose aim is to communicate information about genetic disease to patients or families. This process involves multiple steps that may include, but not be limited to, gathering and assessment of information, establishment of a diagnosis or risk of disease, and discussion of the implications as well as available options to address risk for family members. Support and counseling is also a very important component of this process, which focuses on promoting informed decision-making for patients who are often in very difficult situations.
