Probing hydrophobic microdomains of hydrophobically associating acrylamide-N-alkylacrylamide copolymers in solution using a solvatochromic absorption dye probe

Popis: | Hydrophobically associating water-soluble copolymers of acrylamide and an N-alkylacrylamid, containing a small mole fraction of the N-alkylacrylamide, aggregate in aqueous media forming hydrophobic microdomains. Using the solvatochromic water-insoluble pyridinium-N-phenoxide betaine dye {ET(30)}, the hydrophobic microdomains of these hydrophobically associating polymers were probed. Changes in the hydrophobicity of the microdomains due to variation in hydrophobe chain length, level of incorporation, and addition of surfactant were monitored by measurement of shifts in λ(max) of the solubilized dye probe. A comparison of the absorption probe data with the rheological behavior is also provided |
