Popis: Two series of alkali metal promoted V/SiO 2 catalysts were investigated in the catalytic oxidation of ethanol and 1-butene and by ESR spectroscopy. The influence of alkali metals is shown to be opposite for both reactions. The alkali metals increase the activity for ethanol but decrease that for butene. It could be concluded from the ESR measurements that there is a direct interaction of vanadium ions with the alkali metal cations. At least two vanadium species could be detected one of which, the low temperature species, is active for the oxidation of ethanol but is unstable. The high temperature species are less active and are responsible for the low activity in the oxidation of butene. It is concluded that acidic polyvanadium clusters can be considered to act as catalytic active centers.
