Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the containment of biohazardous agents in work with animals. Much of the discussion on biohazards also applies to the containment of radioactive and chemical hazards used with animals. Safety in an animal laboratory involves work practices, special equipment, and facility features that help manage and reduce risks when working with hazardous agents in animals. It helps in keeping hazardous agents within fixed limits, as close to their source as possible, to minimize or eliminate the inadvertent exposure of persons, animals, and environment, and to safeguard the veracity and quality of research. It is important that containment facilities should be isolated from the remainder of an animal facility or building in which they are located, away from areas of unrestricted access. They should have limited and controlled access for security, public health, animal health, and research integrity. Access to hazard containment facilities should be restricted to those who have received appropriate training and those that require work with infectious agents. Threats posed by persons who oppose the use of animals in research have increased the general security requirements of animal research facilities. |
