Oceanographic current profiles measured using acoustic doppler current profilers (ADCPs) can be made using surface buoy, subsurface and seabed mounting arrangements. Buoy-mounted ADCPs offer several distinct advantages compared to subsurface and seabed mounting options in the areas of serviceability, access to real time data, and energy sustainability. For this application recent advances in orientation measurement and orientation compensation algorithms have resulted in improved measurement accuracy. We present prototype designs for the integration of this technology into a series of surface buoys. Design considerations and constraints for mechanical integration, electrical integration and data management are explored. A field validation plan is outlined with consideration for key performance areas relating to the integration of the instrument to the platforms. |
