Popis: Sub-synchronous control instability (SSCI) is a reliability risk on transmission networks which have high wind penetration in close proximity of series compensated lines. Utilities and system operators are being primarily tasked with conducting SSCI studies for new wind resource interconnections. There has been limited focus on challenges faced by these entities in conducting SSCI studies. This paper provides a review of critical factors that need to be accounted for by utilities and system operators while conducting SSCI studies using an example of a wind farm interconnecting to the Texas grid. In specific, the paper demonstrates the impact of nature of disturbances on the transmission grid, losses in wind farm transformers, wind farm operating conditions, status of grid-side shunt reactors/capacitors and neighboring wind resources on SSCI study results. The paper also provides guidelines for system operators and utilities on including the impact of the factors listed above while conducting SSCI studies.
