Popis: A total of 82 dairy cows in their second or later lactations and with a mean calving date of 18 December were used in a 2-year experiment. The experiment was designed to examine the effect of level and distribution of concentrate given during the winter period in addition to grass silage (ad libitum) and hay (4 kg day−1) on total lactation performance. Each year 3 treatments were compared: Treatment H received concentrate at a high level (920 kg) and Treatments L and LR at a low level (560 kg), but with a different distribution. Concentrate allocation was individually pre-determined according to expected milk production. During summer, all animals grazed together as a single treatment. On total lactation (Weeks 1–36) milk production of Treatments L and LR were similar (4697 kg vs. 4571 kg), but the shape of the lactation curve was different. Milk production of Treatment H was significantly higher (5065 kg). Level and distribution of the concentrate had a significant effect on liveweight at the end of the winter, but these differences disappeared during the pasture period. Reproductive performance of the animals seems to be more regular in Treatments H and LR than in L.
