Popis: | Numerous initiatives exist for the efficient energy management of mine compressed air systems. Most of these initiatives are also part of large projects that provide a definite impact within short timeframes. However, some of these implemented initiatives lack sustainability. A need therefore arises to identify and implement initiatives that continually improve the efficiency of a mine's compressed air system whilst remaining sustainable over long periods of time. This study provides an overview of several easy to implement, cost effective and sustainable initiatives to initiate substantial compressed air energy savings in short timeframes. It also investigates the interrelated nature of these initiatives with the aim to realise increased energy savings as well as an overall reduction in operational impact. As a case study the optimisation initiatives were implemented on the compressed air network of a deep-level gold mine. The initiatives were part of previously implemented projects that deteriorated in performance due to a lack in sustainability. Individually, the energy savings and operational impact of each of these initiatives was limited. The cumulative impact, however, resulted in an average daily power saving of 1.35MW. This translates to an estimated annual electricity cost saving of R8 million, calculated with the 2016/2017 Eskom tariffs. Furthermore, the sustainability improved through development of a sustainability plan focussing on appointing an energy management team, continuous awareness, maintenance and optimised control of the initiatives. |
