Summary A total of 87 heterotrophic bacterial strains were isolated from the waters of two lakes with different levels of eutrophication. Identification of the isolates gave the following genera: Acinetobacter, Aeromonas, Bacillus, Enterobacter, Flavobacterium, Micrococcus , and Pseudomonas . Of these isolates, 71% were resistant to one or more antibiotics. Multiple resistance was found in 44% of bacterial strains, and three strains carried seven resistance determinants. Antibiotic sensitivity showed a certain degree of relationship with genera but not with any habitat. Our results indicate a high level of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains in lake waters not directly polluted with sewage. |
