Popis: A systematic method for establishing accurate distribution of shears, arising from torsional moments to the faces of four-legged lattice structures is presented. Comparison with empirical rules often used to determine such distributions, particularly in the design of transmission towers, clearly demonstrates that these rules may result in serious underdesign of certain members, or undue overdesign of others, depending upon the structure configuration under consideration. It is also demonstrated that the formulation presented for the torsional shear distribution can be used in conjunction with mathematical programming techniques to simplify the determination of optimum designs for such structures, regardless of the number of degrees-of-freedom.
