Popis: Arrighetto is imprisoned when there is a change of regime in Sicily, and Beritola flees to Lipari with her son of eight years, Giuffredi; there she gives birth to another son, Scacciato. Continuing toward Naples with her sons and a nurse, Beritola's ship is forced to stop at an island, where pirates carry off her family; Beritola remains on the island, nursing two baby goats. Eventually another ship arrives, and a gentleman named Currado de' Malespini and his wife take Beritola and the goats home to Lunigiana, where Beritola serves the lady as a maid. Meanwhile, the pirates go to Genoa, where they sell Beritola's sons and nurse to Guasparrino d'Oria as servants. At the age of sixteen Giuffredi, now known as Giannotto, leaves Guasparrino and undertakes a series of adventures (which constitute the story-within-a-story), ending up serving in the home of Currado, where his mother is (although they seldom see one another, and do not realize who the other is). After another revolution reverses the family's political misfortunes, Giannotto reveals his identity to Currado, who reunites him with his mother and proposes that he marry his daughter. They contact Guasparrino in Genoa, who, learning Scacciato's identity, marries him to a daughter before sending him to Lunigiana. The family is finally reunited with Arrighetto, who has been restored to political favor and has recovered his confiscated property.
