Popis:	Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is not recommended in patients with altered consciousness. The most severe hypercapnic coma secondary to acute respiratory failure is considered a contraindication for its use. However, intubation exposes these patients to the risk of complications and even death. The purpose of this chapter is to review available published data about use of NIV in hypoxic-hypercapnic encephalopathy.
