Popis: Rosmarinic acid (RA) is a polyphenolic compound similar to caffeic acid that has gained much therapeutic attention recently because of its bewildering therapeutic effects, primarily in diseases underlying mitochondrial dysfunction. Several experimental studies have indicated that the therapeutic effects of RA may be attributed to its antioxidant effects, antiinflammatory effects, enhancement of autophagic flux, mitochondrial biogenesis, reducing proteotoxic stress, and improving mitochondrial function. A wide variety of dietary supplements contain RA and their consumption is increasingly being encouraged due to its nutraceutical importance. This chapter offers a detailed discussion on RA and its effect on different diseases associated with mitochondrial dysfunction. An insight into its mechanistic action with respect to the regulation of 5′ adenosine monophosphate-activated kinase (AMPK) is discussed. This review emphasizes the importance of RA and mitochondria as its therapeutic target and enlists the translational possibilities of this nutraceutical.
