Kinetics modeling is a necessary step to understand the anaerobic digestion (AD) process. This kinetics depends essentially on the nature of the substrate and the operating conditions. There are several studies on kinetic models of AD related to inhibition phenomena, product formation kinetics, hydrolysis phase, biogas production, and biodegradability. AD technologies are known to be quite complex processes. AD can sometimes suffer from instabilities that are mainly due to the significant fluctuations of some parameters. The aim of this chapter is to show the important role of the kinetic study on the performance of AD. The main kinetics models used to characterize the AD process are discussed. |
