Catalytic conversions in heterogeneous catalysis originate from the molecular interactions occurring at the gas-solid and liquid-solid interface. The study of these is a complex problem for the theoretical chemist, while the experimentalist usually has no problems in systematizing her or his findings. The vast number of industrial applications and successes certainly gives credit to the empirical approach. The experimentalist, however, may soon realize that in the absence of firm guidelines and scientific understanding progress is costly and requires a significant effort in the screening of various materials. On the other hand, theoretical progress is mostly slow and lags behind the experimental results, and little time is taken to translate the discoveries into comprehensible language. |
