Disposal of household and cell phone batteries is a problem that involves not only governmental agencies, but also the population as a whole. Community cooperation can contribute to reducing the negative impacts of hazardous waste on the environment. In this context, the present study, developed by undergraduate students of Environmental Engineering at the Instituto Federal Fluminense, campu s Campos-Guarus, aims to analyze how residents of Calabouco, Jardim Carioca and Parque Guarus neighborhoods, in the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes, dispose of batteries. We also analyze awareness of the subject among participants. The listed neighborhoods were chosen due to their proximity to the institution, which facilitated the development of this study. Initially, we prepared a questionnaire with six questions about the disposal of household and cell phone batteries. Following, the questionnaire was applied to 308 residents in the selected districts. The result of the questionnaires was duly tabulated and statistically treated. This survey shows that, in the investigated locations, the level of knowledge about the issue is relatively low, and the disposal of these materials is not properly made. |
