It is shown herein that thiol-terminated-molecular-lines, which have lengths up to 9 nm, self assemble into monolayers on a gold surface. Using electrochemistry, as many as eight electrons can be added to each molecule in the monolayer without desorption. Coulometry revealed the number of molecules in the monolayer, the time required for self-assembly and the replacement of surface bound dodecyl mercaptan by a thiol-terminated-molecular-line. Electron spin resonance (ESR) gave information about anion radicals in a reduced monolayer |
