Popis: | A polymer resembling humic acid was prepared by oxidation of 3,4-dihydroxycinnamic acid (caffeic acid) with periodic acid. The polymer was then subjected to reductive cleavage with sodium amalgam. The resulting phenolic products were examined with the aid of both thin-layer and high-performance liquid chromatography. The one low-molecular phenolic product that could be detected after cleavage was hydrocaffeic acid. That compound is also formed by reduction of caffeic acid with sodium amalgam. We therefore concluded that caffeic acid persists as an important structural constituent of the polymer. |
