Popis: | Has musculoskeletal medicine reached a crossroads? I wonder whether other groups are having, or have had, the same experience as us. Notwithstanding the massive progress made in the UK by the British Institute of Musculoskeletal Medicine (BIMM) in the expansion and quality of modular educational programmes and flagging up musculoskeletal medicine in diverse arenas, and the very successful educational programme undertaken by the Society of Orthopaedic Medicine for many years, we are now faced with a misunderstanding regarding the characteristics of musculoskeletal medicine and its identity. This creates a potential barrier to the development of a recognised subspecialty and the benefits to be gained by such recognition. This barrier is the increasing use of generic 'musculoskeletal medicine' (as a substitute for 'musculoskeletal services') to describe the provision of healthcare services within the NHS in the UK with respect to patients with musculoskeletal complaints.
