Field experiments were conducted to compare the effects of pigwaste sludge age and inoculum on rate of composting by using temperature as an indicator. The minimum thermophilic temperatures for sludge aged 7, 14 and 18 days were obtained within 1–5 days of composting. Ten percent sludge inoculum is enough to activate the composting process. No significant differences in the composting process of mixed and unmixed piles were obtained during the rainy period. Predominant high temperature fungi were isolated and identified in the laboratory as thermotolerant: Penicillum PS4 and thermophilic: Humicola insolens PS1, Torula thermophila PS2 and unifentified PS3. |
