It has been shown by X-ray emission and by EXAFS spectrosxopy that, in the diene-iron tricarbonyl block copolymer investigated, the iron atoms are coordinated by butadiene and carbonyl ligands. During heat treatment, the diene-iron tricarbonyl fragment breaks up with the formation of polymers in which the iron atoms exist in a high-spin state and are chemically combined with the molecular orbitals of the butadiene fragments of not less than two polymeric chains, there being no metal-metal bond. Quantitative data has been obtained by EXAFS spectroscopy about the atomic structure in the nearest-neighbour coordination sphere of the iron atom in the polymers investigated. |
