Popis: | Studies of factors determining the answers given to test items have neglected the solution procedures whereby the answers are obtained. Right answers can be given for wrong reasons, and the answers themselves give no indication of this. Children 8.5–12.5 years old were given nonverbal analogy items. When questioned, many reported using solution procedures which were erroneous but which happened to yield correct answers. This makes interpretation of scores ambiguous, and spuriously inflates the percentages passing the items affected. Minor changes in item structure render these erroneous solution procedures unsuccessful, thus achieving some control over solution procedures as a determinant of response, and the percentages passing the affected items decrease as predicted (.01 > p > .005). |
