Popis: | In a previous paper we pointed out the existence of an interesting time-reversal odd, parity-even (TO, PE) term in the transition probability for the stimulated Raman effect. This term is proportional to where and are the polarizations of the Raman beams. While our discussion was restricted to the situation where the Raman beam frequencies were well off-resonance from the intermediate levels, we now extend the analysis to the region where the Raman frequencies are close to resonance with the intermediate levels. We find that there can be an additional term, proportional to the decay rate, , of the intermediate levels. This second term, which occurs in the presence of decay from the intermediate levels, partially mimics the TO, PE term. It has the same dependence on polarization and quantum numbers, but it varies in an entirely distinct way with the frequency offset of the intermediate levels. More fundamentally, the two effects have opposite reversal properties when the initial and final states of the Raman transition are interchanged. We also show that in the presence of decay there can be an additional TO, PE effect which survives even for unpolarized Raman beams. |
