The fluorescence excitation spectrum of thymine: Evidence for wavelength dependence of the quantum yield

Popis: The absorption and fluorescence excitation spectra of thymine in dilute alkali do not agree; the fluorescence quantum yield is wavelength dependent. The disagreement may be explained by associating the fluorescence with one of the two tautomeric forms assumed by thymine in dilute alkali. The fluorescence quantum yields of 10−3 M thymine in 10−2 N NaOH and in 10−2 N NaOH in 75% dioxane with excitation at 290 mμ are 0.0016 and 0.0025, respectively. The emission maxima in these solvents are at 390 mμ and 380 mμ, respectively.
