Popis: The looming insecurity from limited reserve for fossil fuel and inescapable growing demand for sustainable cleaner energy resources has created wider interest on the use of biofuels. The paradigm of biofuel production has evolved toward a biorefinery concept, which aims to provide an array of marketable products in order to maximize its economic sustainability without any wastage. Biomass in biorefinery can be routed through either biochemical or thermochemical pathways and the industry can be classified on the basis of major feedstocks used. Most of the known biorefinery feedstocks are from food crops, therefore biorefinery has created the controversy of food-fuel competition, which builds a possibility of increased food price due to extensive biorefinery practice in future. The chapter focuses on the use of different food crops as feedstocks for biorefinery, demand of the biorefinery products and the anticipated effects on food market.
