Line oriented flight training (LOFT) has been an accepted part of training and evaluation for multicrew aircraft since the mid-1970s. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a practical guide to the process of designing and delivering this type of training. We briefly cover the history of line oriented simulation (LOS) and of the transition when crew resource management (CRM) skills came to be trained in parallel with technical objectives. We then describe a proven procedure for producing this type of training that follows guidance from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Advanced Qualification Program and the instructional systems design model. The role of continual evaluation through data collection and analysis is covered, as well as options for customizing the development process to organizations of varied sizes and missions. Finally, an argument is made for the continuation of LOS as an effective means of enhancing and solidifying CRM skills. |
