In Reply. —We appreciate the kind words of our colleague Dr Silfen. His observations and references will be useful to our future undertakings. With regard to the letter from Dr Gorsuch, we are indeed troubled by his situating our appeal for a more equitable distribution of health care services and other social resources within the arena of "social engineering." Nonetheless, we will continue to be guided by Rudolph Virchow's principle of 130 years ago, when he argued that it was incongruous to treat a patient with tuberculosis if it meant returning the patient to the customary squalor and filth from which his misfortune sprung. We here who labor within the arid vineyards of the dispossessed are not acquainted with Gorsuch's sector of sufferers who had chosen this deprived and sullen existence. Indeed, every day we encounter all kinds of people desperately clamoring and working toward an escape from the condition |
