Overweight and association with food habits of students from Jundiaí, São Paulo

Popis: Objective: Determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity in adolescent students from Jundiai city in Sao Paulo state, Brazil, and to learn about feeding and nutrition aspects that contribute to this health problem. Material andMethods: It is a descriptive, cross-sectional quantitative conducted with 525 adolescents who completeda questionnaire containing demographic questions and food habits. Anthropometric measurements were also performed and Body Mass Index was calculated, considering between 85-95 percentilefor overweight and 2': 95th percentile for obesity (significance levei of 5%). Results: Of the 525 students, 59.2% were female, 48.2% were in public school and 51.8% to private. The mean age was 15.8 ± 1.Oyears. The prevalence ofoverweight among schoolchildren was 15.6% and obesity 6.3% (21.9%). Significant association was found with the school (p~0.0155), being obesity more common in public schools and overweight in private schools.
