The article presents a contemporary state and usage of transport engineering monuments in four voivodeships of Southeastern Poland (Lesser Poland, Subcarpathian, Lublin and Świetokrzyskie voivodeships). The monuments were enumerated on the basis of source materials, tables, spatial depictions on thematic maps, as well as descriptions of their general values in the places richest in monuments. The analysis shows that Lesser Poland voivodeship is the richest one in monuments (4th place according to national evidence of monuments) and there are mostly connected with railway transport. The number of monuments is relatively low in Świetokrzyskie voivodeship (11 places), however, along with railway monuments, local monuments of engineering form a considerable percentage. Among the museums, Lesser Poland museums are distinctive, due to a large amount of monuments (Museum of Municipal Engineering and Polish Aviation Museum in Cracow; Road Construction Museum in Szczucin; Railway Open-Air Museum in Chabowka). Periodically functioning narrow-gauge railways are also local tourism attractions (“Ciuchcia” in Bieszczady Mountains; “Pogorzanin” in Przeworsk; Vistula Narrow-gauge Railway in Naleczow; Narrow-Gauge Railway in Starachowice; “Ciuchcia Express Ponidzie” in Świetokrzyskie). The usage of cultural heritage on the field of engineering, including transport monuments, might revive the development of tourism in some less developed regions of voivedships in question. Many objects, as evidences of old transport engineering, still awaits to be granted protection. |
