Popis: | Current journal articles and those in the popular press have addressed issues of physician fatigue, depression, and decreased duty hours. Better health care includes the health of the provider. While residents may have mandated decreased duty hours, there is no mandate for faculty to have decreased hours. Recent literature reports increased depression in attending physicians who may not receive the mental health care they deserve. The culture of medicine has its own difficulties in reporting impaired colleagues. Some physicians may have concerns about being seen as weak or less intelligent if they disclose a depressive illness. Curricular reform that embraces a life-work balance and wellness should begin early in medical education and continue throughout professional development. Behavioral science faculties are in a unique position to address this issue in training programs and in the professional literature. |
