Popis: The definition of interferon (IFN) as a cellular protein capable of making cultured cells resistant to virus infection depends upon a biologic assay. The purpose of the assay is to determine biologic activity, or potency, in ways comparable to what has been done with antibiotics, vitamins, or hormones. The components of the IFN bioassay include suitable cultured cells, a virus that will replicate in these cells to provide a given effect or product, and the means to measure this. The attributes of an ideal assay are precision, reproducibility, objectivity, sensitivity, efficiency, rapidity, and economy of time, effort, and supplies.
