Cytokines are a heterogeneous group of pluripotent intercellular regulatory peptides released from a wide variety of cell types. Their functions are usually on cells involved in either the immune system or the inflammatory processes, and appear to be both complementary and redundant. Cytokines have frequently been implicated in various cardiovascular diseases. For example, the cytokines tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6 are increased in patients with acute myocardial infarction [1]. This fits well with one of the roles of IL-6 as a regulator of the acute phase reaction [2]. It appears that it is the reoxygenation event following ischemia that stimulates the release of IL-1β IL-6, IFN-γ, and TNF- α [3–5]. Since IL- 1β can cause the induction of the iNOS in cultured rat cells [6] and TNF- α promotes ICAM-1-mediated rat neutrophil-myocyte adhesion [1], these cytokines have been suggested to play various roles in superoxide radical generation, endothelial injury, and deposition and activation of cellular components on the vessel wall [4]. |
