Popis: We have computed the total linear momentum P/sub z/ radiated in gravitational waves when a particle of mass ..mu.. falls along the z-axis into a Kerr black hole of mass M>>..mu.. and angular momentum M..cap alpha... For a = 0 we find that Vertical Bar..delta..P/sub z/ Vertical Bar = 8.73 x 10/sup -4/ ..mu../sup 2/M/sup -1/c. Interestingly, the radiated momentum decreases when a increases. We find Vertical Bar..delta..P/sub z/ Vertical Bar = 9.73 x 10/sup -5/ ..mu../sup 2/M/sup -1/c when a = 0.99. We use our results to argue that there seems as yet no conflict between the apparent observation of massive black holes in the centers of galaxies and estimates of the magnitude of recoil velocities imparted to black holes by gravitational radiation reaction during collision events that may have formed them.
