Can one, by putting the Brontes on the stage, illuminate the mysteries of genius? If theatrical effectiveness were one's only aim it would be easy to achieve with so dramatic a story, full of light and shade, triumph and tragedy. But can the dramatist show the inner ligh t of character that led a Charlotte or an Emily Bronte to excite millions of readers in many lands? This question rose in my mind as I went to St. James's Theatre, London, in June, 1948. At that theatre, the home of great memories, the British Theatre Group and the Arts Council of Great Britain were presenting the Sheffield Repertory Company in “The Brontes,” by Alfred Sangster. |
