The first thing to consider when developing an alternative assessment instrument is the purpose and the goals for assessing students; that is, why are you assessing and what is it you wish to assess about students’ science learning? The purpose for the assessment instrument shared in this chapter was to measure students’ conceptual understandings and performance capabilities at the conclusion of the seventh grade; in other words to serve as a comprehensive examination. The goals for the comprehensive examination also included informing practice. The [Benchmarks] assisted me as a tool in this process. |
