Popis: Although many papers have been published arising from the international EC/JRC and NEA collaborative Programme for the Inspection of Steel Components (for some of these see references at end of this paper), these have related to specific and detailed aspects of the work and its results. During my long period as Chairman of the Management Boards for this work I learnt many lessons and realised that many of these were of general interest, beyond the specific technologies related to non-destructive examination (NDE) and to pressure vessel integrity assessment. I have therefore encouraged Serge Crutzen, who contributed so much to the success of this venture, and his colleagues to produce this present paper devoted to bringing together such lessons of general interest.
