Popis: Coconut palms (Cocos nucifera L.) are an important subsistence and cash crop in the humid tropical regions of the world. Coconuts primarily yield copra and coconut oil that are also major tradeable commodities and sources of foreign revenue for producing-countries. The coconut palm is often called “the tree of life” because of its multitude of uses: for food, drink, fuel, and building materials, to name a few. However, demand for the crop has dwindled in recent decades due to competition from other oilseeds and synthetic fibres. The industry is lacking inputs, particularly in research and development, and it is plagued by problems such as the old age of existing plantations, the lack of improved planting material and the presence of several devastating pests and diseases.
