Popis: Summary form only given. The magnetically insulated line oscillator (MILO) is a low impedance, highly powerful source of coherent RF radiation. It is also compact and relatively simple. MILO's RMS efficiency however is not very high. This is due to the fact that a large fraction of the DC input current goes into the generation of the azimuthal magnetic field needed to guide the initially radial beam into an axial flow. It has been shown that providing the azimuthal magnetic field through an external means, will not interfere with the MILO operation. This can be achieved through an independent circuit flowing an axial current near the cathode. Building upon this finding, we have designed a new MILO that operates with a significantly less input power while producing the same output as the conventional MILO. The new design has a higher impedance and provides no particle current for self-insulation. Results of the numerical simulations, carried out using the PIC code MAGIC will be presented.
