A successful SAVE study on improving electric motor efficiency in the EU led to the initiation of a similar study on pumps. It is generally acknowledged that the greatest opportunities for savings in pump life cycle costs lie in the field of application. These aspects are being pursued elsewhere. This study therefore concentrates on improving the efficiencies of the pumps themselves operating within the EU. Potential energy savings are well in excess of 50 MECUpa. The pumps initially chosen for evaluation are of the double entry split case and end suction types working within the duty ranges of maximum popularity. The analysis of efficiencies as published by makers shows considerable scatter. ‘Higher efficiency’ pumps will be defined to give makers and users the opportunity to produce and to buy pumps which will give lower life cycle costs. Methods of avoiding unnecessary deterioration in efficiency during pump lifetimes will also be publicised. Five partners chosen from across Europe are taking part in the study with assistance from the makers and users. |
