GGOS was established in July 2003 (for the following also see (Rothacher et al. n.d.)). It is the definition of an observing system of the IAG. In the year 2007, it acquired the status of a full component of the IAG after a first design and implementation phase. GGOS is both an organization structure and an observation system (see Fig. 6.1). One aspect is supported by the Steering Committee, Science Panel, Working Groups, and so on, while the observing is done with an existing, but extended geodetic infrastructure, composed of the systems of the geodetic services. They support the establishment of precise reference systems, which then support the three pillars of geodesy, which are geokinematics, Earth rotation, and the gravity field (see also Fig. 1.1 on page xxx). Another function of GGOS is to increase public awareness of geodesy through the publicity raised. |
