marked sexual dimorphism (Leach and Dagg 1976). Distinction between wintertrapped adult and juvenile animals has not been possible with femoral measurements (Leach and Dagg 1976) or, unfortunately, with the state of fusion of the distal femoral epiphysis (Dagg et al. 1975). Reliability of the suprafabellar tubercle in distinguishing between tooth-cementum-aged adult and juvenile males of each species is acceptable, whereas that for females, especially in fisher, is probably not within workable accuracy needed for management purposes. The techniques described in this paper constitute a reliable and rapid method for distinguishing juvenile from adult males of either species. |
