In the wake of a large epidemic of rubella which reached a peak in the spring of 1964, an epidemic of congenital abnormalities occurred in Philadelphia during the last half of 1964 and the first months of 1965. The striking facts concerning the infants born after intrauterine rubella have been the severity and diversity of the abnormalities, including thrombocytopenic purpura, hepatosplenomegaly, and abnormalities of the long bones, as well as the high frequency with which rubella virus has been isolated from the nasopharynx of affected infants. |
