A new concept to measure the direct normal irradiance (DNI) is evaluated. While the state of the art setup to measure the DNI is comprised of a pyrheliometer assembled on a sun tracker, the EKO MS-90 measures DNI based on a sunshine duration concept which doesn’t require a tracker to align the sensor aperture with the sun disk, presenting a relatively low-cost solution to measure DNI. In this work, we present a study of the EKO MS-90 accuracy. We evaluate the sensor measurement error by comparing the DNI measurements with the output from a reference pyrheliometer assembled on a sun tracker. The preliminary results for clear sky conditions show deviations from the reference within ±5%, for solar zenith angles smaller than 75° and DNI values higher than 700 W/m2. Larger deviations practically within 10% are observed for greater angles and lower DNI values.
