Popis: | It is generally believed that the elbow differs from the other major limb joints in that degenerative changes may become relatively advanced before symptoms develop to such a degree that surgical intervention is required. There is, however, no evidence that the tissues of the elbow or the pathology of these conditions in the elbow differ in any way from that of the other joints. A more likely explanation for the tendency to postpone surgery for elbow arthritis is a persisting pessimism about the results of the surgical treatments currently available. This article reviews the available surgical procedures other than joint replacement for treatment of pain and stiffness in the elbow. The operations of arthrolysis, 'auto-arthroplasty', synovectomy and arthrodesis are considered together with emerging arthroscopic techniques and set against the background of continuing improvements in replacement arthroplasty. |
