Popis: A mechanism explaining cumulative laser damage to optical materials is proposed. This mechanism postulates spatial separation of products of pyrolysis of a material by thermal diffusion in a temperature gradient around an absorbing microinclusion. This is followed by the formation of absorbing and gaseous products.
