The present investigation examines the effects of fission neutron fluences in the range 10 5 –10 10 n/cm 2 on the mechanical properties of three polymers; namely, dralon, nylon-6 and polyester. Polyester exhibits a nonlinear reduction in tensile strength (TS) reaching a minimum value followed by a maximum in the regions of fluence of 10 6 and 10 8 n/cm 2 , respectively. Nylon-6 showed continuous deterioration in its TS value, while dralon was improved by irradiation in the fluence range used. On the other hand, the percentage elongation was reduced by irradiation for the three polymers and nylon-6 showed the highest radiation sensitivity. |
