Popis: Introduction Asthma is a leading cause of hospitalizations and missed school days in children. We hypothesized that poor caregiver knowledge about asthma would be associated with a longer length of stay in children hospitalized with an asthma exacerbation. Methods 73 children (ages 2-17 years), hospitalized with asthma exacerbations, participated in the study from December 2012 to December 2013. Caregivers completed questionnaires at admission, discharge and after 4-6 weeks. All families received asthma education (interactive asthma materials and caregiver demonstration of correct inhaler technique). Poor caregiver knowledge was defined as a Likert scale score of 1-4/6 on questions about medications and triggers. Results Children of caregivers with poor asthma knowledge were 4 times more likely to have a prolonged hospital stay (> 2 days) as compared to those with adequate asthma knowledge (OR=4.44, 95% CI 1.075-18.34; logistic regression), after adjusting for age, baseline asthma control, Pediatric ICU stay, parental education, payer and ethnicity. After inpatient education, caregivers demonstrated an increase in general asthma knowledge (p =0.002; McNemar's test) and specifically, about the use of an asthma action plan (p Conclusions Caregiver knowledge may predict length of stay in children hospitalized with asthma exacerbations, and can be improved after education. Future prospective studies should examine whether improved caregiver knowledge can reduce length of stay and health care services utilization.
