For the past twenty-seven years, the Sexual Behaviors Consultation Unit (SBCU) has offered training in the evaluation and treatment of sexual disorders to third-year psychiatry residents at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and its structure and method of providing didactic and clinical training are proposed as a model of teaching psychiatry residents. Weekly seminars are followed by clinical evaluation of patients with sexual disorders by residents. In both teaching and case formulation, the unit values the different contributions of participants. An evaluative questionnaire sent to recent graduates of the psychiatry residency generated a response rate of 54 percent, and reflected a positive and often superlative assessment of the SBCU. Residents also proposed topics for the training syllabus and nominated skills important for practice. |
